iPals is an intergenerational project that links 6th form colleges and schools with their local care home. Through the use of iPads, our young volunteers work with older people and those living with dementia and help them to reconnect with past hobbies and interests in a stimulating and meaningful way.
This project helps to forge friendships and shows younger people how joining together can help improve the lives of older people in care.
The project runs once a week for an hour and each project ends with a small exhibition of the work created. The exhibition is a wonderful way to communicate the skills taught throughout the project. In this way, the residents have a visual reminder of their involvement. Having a celebration of the work created during the project enables Older People and those living with Dementia to feel that they are an active part of their community. This can be a powerful tool when used to help fight loneliness.
